Introduction to Works
On the occasion of the 120th anniversary of China Agricultural University, the "Teaching the People to Cultivate and Harvest" cultural feature wall, jointly funded by alumni worldwide and designed under the direction of Professor Li Xianfeng from the College of Horticulture, has been solemnly unveiled at the plaza in front of Yiyuan (Serenity Garden) on the West Campus. This landmark, embodying the founding mission and cultural DNA of the university's 120-year history, has become an emotional bond connecting global alumni with their alma mater through its unique design language and profound historical significance.
The wall draws its spiritual core from the Teaching the People to Cultivate and Harvest, which was engraved on the university gate back in 1905 during its time as the Agricultural College of the Metropolitan University. Professor Li Xianfeng and the 920 Art Landscape Studio recreated this historical concept using contemporary design vocabulary. Spatially, theTeaching the People and Cultivate and Harvest are positioned on either side of the central "National Peace and Prosperity Cauldron" in the plaza, creating the visual metaphor of "the tripod supporting the legacy of agriculture education," thereby continuing the university's cultural tradition of integrating farming with scholarship. In terms of form and material, the wall is constructed from grey brick, granite, and concrete, with each single wall panel measuring 3.5 meters in height and 6.3 meters in length, its rectangular form echoing the historical original. The front side replicates the original Chinese characters from the old university wall, while the back features a white marble relief titled "120 Years of University History Through Wind and Rain." The relief design adopts a realistic style and unfolds across four panels, meticulously depicting the university's journey from its founding in 1905 to its current status as a "Double First-Class" institution through key dates, iconic buildings, and major historical events. Regarding the visual experience, the viewing distance is ergonomically designed: the full panorama is visible from 9 meters away, an immersive impact is felt within 4 meters, and barrier-free viewing is comfortable at 2 meters, enabling a multi-layered experience.
The construction of the feature wall progressed through five main stages: production and installation of the relief and text elements, foundation work, main structure masonry, assembly of the relief and text components, and final site integration. The foundation phase utilized reinforced concrete structures to ensure stability while also completing the protection of underground utilities. For the main masonry, weather-resistant materials like grey brick and granite were selected and meticulously finished to achieve a smooth and aesthetically pleasing surface. The relief and text sections employed the dry-hanging stone technique. Master carvers used various methods to intricately depict the historical scenes on the reliefs, while the Chinese characters were precisely carved from white marble and installed with accuracy. Finally, professional lighting and complementary landscaping were integrated, ensuring the wall presents a striking view both day and night and blends harmoniously with the plaza environment. In September 2025, the "Teaching the People to Cultivate and Harvest" cultural feature wall was officially completed. Integrated seamlessly with the plaza and enhanced by a carefully designed lighting system, it stands as a new spiritual landmark on campus, harmoniously blending history, culture, and aesthetics.
